What does in-home care cost?

Wages are regulated provincially so can vary from province to province. However, the following example, based on a wage of $8 per hour, is typical:

Basic gross income per month:
(Based 22 days at 8 hours/day X $8/hour)
$1,408
Maximum for board and lodging: $325
Subtotal:  $1,083
Tax, CPP, EI deductions (estimated)
(This is deducted and paid by employer to Revenue Canada )
$180
Net income of caregiver/month  $903

Federal Disability Tax Credit

To assist Canadians who engage a live-in caregiver to help them cope with an ongoing physical or mental disability, the federal government offers a disability tax credit certificate.

Those who are eligible receive a tax credit of up to $600 per month, which may be applied against the cost of a live-in caregiver.

Childcare and disabled childcare deductions

To offset the cost of live-in domestic help, Revenue Canada allows parents to claim substantial deductions against the income of the family’s lower income earner.

  • For each child under the age of seven, parents can deduct a maximum of $7,000 per year.
  • For each child aged 7 to 16, parents can deduct a maximum of $4,000 per year
  • For each child with an eligible disability, parents can deduct a maximum of $10,000 per year.

Note that these deductions are applied against the income of the lower income earner.
